RCG assists with new energy solution for Shetland’s future power supplies
Wednesday, Jun 14, 2017
Specialist advisory firm, The Renewables Consulting Group (RCG) has been assisting Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN), operating under licence as Scottish Hydro Electric Power Distribution (SHEPD), with the process to secure the future of Shetland’s electricity supply.

A tender evaluation process has now been completed and the preferred bid announced for the delivery of a new energy solution for Shetland. The winning tender is a joint project between National Grid Interconnector Holdings Ltd (NGI) and Aggreko UK Ltd, which combines a 60MW High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) subsea cable link to the GB electricity network, alongside on-island backup generation. If regulatory approval is granted, contracts are expected to be signed later this year, followed by construction and commissioning, with the new energy solution expected to be operational by the end of 2020.

Dan Pearson, Managing Director, Europe, at RCG commented:

“We built a close relationship with the team at Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) to help deliver this challenging project to reliably meet Shetland’s long-term electricity needs. Working with stakeholders, such as Ofgem, we have been able to find an optimum economic and efficient solution. What differentiates RCG is our capacity to support clients from strategy through to execution.”

The Renewables Consulting Group supported SSEN throughout the Shetland tender process by providing commercial, project management and stakeholder support services. The team worked closely with SSEN’s other specialist consultants to deliver a successful conclusion to the tender phase.
